State of Siege Declared After Gang Killings of Eight Police Officers - Guatemala

An inmate watches a riot at the Men's Detention Center Fraijanes II, Fraijanes Municipality, Guatemala, January 17, 2026. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has declared a nationwide state of siege for 30 days following a wave of coordinated attacks against the country's National Civil Police, which left at least seven officers dead, authorities said Sunday. The emergency measure seeks to strengthen state action against criminal gangs and guarantee public security, Arevalo said, after violence erupted in connection with prison riots in which gang members took 46 people hostage at three detention centers. Arevalo also decreed three days of national mourning for the fallen officers and confirmed that authorities have regained control of the three prisons where unrest was reported. China: Man Climbs 30-Meter Tree to Rescue Stranded Cat

This video shows the heartwarming moment a Chinese man risked his own safety to rescue a helpless cat stranded high above the ground for more than a week. Filmed on December 11, 2025, in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, the footage captures retired veteran Zhang Yuhua climbing a nearly 30-meter-tall metasequoia tree to save a small cat trapped at the top. Using only his bare hands and no professional climbing equipment, Zhang carefully made his way up the towering tree. According to the video, the cat had been stuck there for nine days and was growing visibly weaker. After several tense moments, he reached the cat, secured it, and slowly descended, prompting applause from onlookers. Zhang later said the cat was taken to a temporary foster shelter for care and observation.
